Israel was an early acquirer of the advanced plane, signing a deal in 2010 and receiving its first two aircraft in 2016; it is believed to have been the first country to use the plane in combat in 2018.
"At [a] time when some of our adversaries aim to undermine our ties with our greatest ally, we only further strengthen our alliance,” Israel’s Minister of Defense Yoav Gallant said of signing the $3 billion deal.
IDF Chief of Staff Herzi Halevi visited an Israeli base home to F-35s on Monday, emphasizing Iran’s missiles had caused only minor damage to the facility.
The move is largely symbolic, as Israel doesn't "need the F-35 for the operations they are currently conducting over Gaza, " Patrick Bolder, a defense analyst at The Hague Centre for Strategic Studies think tank, told Breaking Defense.
While this is the first known use of an F-35 to take down an incoming missile, the concept, at least on paper, is not new.
